VIDEO: Rich, Cash family spar over McCain comment

Country legend Johnny Cash's daughter Rosanne has taken aim at John Rich for suggesting her father would be a John McCain voter at a presidential campaign rally.

Rich, who is a big fan of the Republican, recently stated, "I'm sure Johnny Cash would have been a John McCain supporter if he was still around," at a recent campaign stop, and the remark has upset the late star's kin.

In a statement, Rosanne Cash says, "It is appalling to me that people still want to invoke my father's name, five years after his death, to ascribe beliefs, ideals, values and loyalties to him that cannot possibly be determined, and to try to further their own agendas by doing so.

"I knew my father pretty well, at least better than some of those who entitle themselves to his legacy and his supposed ideals, and even I would not presume to say publicly what I know he thought or felt.

"This is especially dangerous in the case of political affiliation. It is unfair and presumptuous to use him to bolster any platform. I would ask that my father not be co-opted in this election for either side, since he is clearly not here to defend or state his own allegiance."

He says, "He's a guy that was physically tortured for five-and-a-half years in Vietnam, had his bones broken and nobody reset them; he reset his own arms... His arms (still) don't work right because when they snapped his bones there was no doctor to reset his bones for him."

Country star Kenny Chesney turned sports hero at the New Orleans Saints' pre-season practice last week - when he won the team a Sunday off.

Saints coach Sean Payton, who is a friend of the singer, invited Chesney to join the footballers at Thursday's on-field work-out, and promised to give the players a day to themselves if the visitor could catch a punt.

Chesney, wearing helmet, pads and a Saints shirt with his name on the back, failed to keep a hold of his first two attempts, but caught the third - much to the delight of his team-mates for the day.

The country star, who was a top high school footballer in Tennessee, was then saluted by Payton, who insisted the singer was part of the team.

A thrilled Chesney said, "I quit growing too young to ever think about getting to have a shot at playing in college, so this is about as much fun I can have."

STARKVILLE, Mississippi, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Famed recording artist Rosanne Cash is to headline the 2nd annual Johnny Cash Flower Pickin' Festival in Starkville, Mississippi, festival organizers said.

The event is to take place in the city where Cash's late father, music icon Johnny Cash, was arrested more than 40 years ago.

"Paying tribute to the Man in Black's life through redemption and flowers Oct. 17 through 19, Cash's friends, family and fans from throughout the world are to gather to honor his life and legacy," planners said in a release. "The festival will feature music, guest speakers, a charity auction and a symbolic pardon of Cash's crime of 'pickin' flowers' in the small northeastern Mississippi town."

Johnny Cash was arrested for public drunkenness in Starkville on May 11, 1965 after he performed at Mississippi State University. He recalled the incident in his song, "Starkville City Jail."

Marshall Grant, Cash's original bassist and former tour manager, helped organize the festival. He said he thinks Cash would have appreciated the tribute to his "less than perfect life."

"For everything he did, something good seemed to come out of it," Grant said in a statement. "Starkville is a good example."

Kidman, Urban To Media: Stay Away During Trip With Baby

VIDEO: Kidman, baby get hounded by media

(UPI) – U.S.-born Australian actress Nicole Kidman has asked the media to back off while she and husband Keith Urban show their baby daughter around Sydney.

Kidman gave birth to Sunday Rose, her first child with Urban, last month in Nashville.

The BBC said the Oscar-winning actress told radio's "2Day FM" she and Urban wanted some space "so we can walk around Sydney and show the baby our town."

Urban also requested that paparazzi refrain from getting right in his, his wife and his daughter's faces "because it's scary" for the newborn.

"Sometimes when people come right up in your face you think, 'Good God, would you do that to anybody else's child?'" he said.

The BBC also quoted Urban as telling the radio station he and his wife have no plans to sell photos of their baby.

"I get the interest there is. But at the same time it's our little girl," Urban said.

Keith Hits Back At Pro-lynching Claims

The allegation was made by a newspaper blogger last week, citing lyrics in Keith's 2003 track "Beer for my Horses," in which he sings about, "...hanging them high in the street."

DAILY ENTERTAINMENT PHOTOS: Get the Latest Celeb Gossip!

Country star Toby Keith has defended himself against claims one of his songs celebrates lynching.

The allegation was made by a newspaper blogger last week, citing lyrics in Keith's 2003 track "Beer for my Horses," in which he sings about, "...hanging them high in the street".

The subject is particularly sensitive because many blacks were lynched by racist groups during the 19th century.

But Keith insists his words have been misconstrued - and dubs the Huffington Post blogger a "moron".

He says, "It's about the old west and horses and sheriffs and posses and going and getting the bad guys. It's not a racist thing or about lynching. The song was a hit and the words lynch and racism has never come up until this moron wrote this blog."
